Continue reading →

Εσύ, δημοσιογράφε, τι θα γίνεις όταν μεγαλώσεις;

Το μεγάλο ερωτηματικό στοιχειώνει τα μυαλά όσων είχαν μάθει ότι δημοσιογραφία και παραδοσιακά ΜΜΕ είναι αξεχώριστα: Και τώρα τι κάνουμε; Αλλάζουμε δουλειά;
We are looking for a data journalist/data scientist to join our team in NYC who will find and develop stories using our data. This includes financing, M&A, social media, news, and jobs data related to private companies and their investors and acquirers.
The ideal candidate will have a few years of experience after their undergraduate degree and must be happy, hungry and humble.
Specifically, to be successful in this role, you should be very comfortable with:
  • Tools that let you ask questions of data – At a minimum, this means you are a power Excel user and can use it to analyze and find patterns in data. If you use only shortcut keys and know pivot tables like the back of your hand, that’s probably a good start. If you know VBA or know statistical tools like R, that’s an even bigger plus.
  • Analysis – A background in computer science, math, statistics or finance will probably be best.
  • Presentation & Story Telling – You need to be able to be a good writer who can take your analysis and convey it in a compelling and clear way using graphs, charts and other visualizations. The ability to create interactive visualizations, infographics, etc is also a huge plus in being able to convey your stories. If you’ve used or are familiar with Google Visualizations, d3, HighCharts, Raphael, or other similar tools, bonus points.
  • Storyboarding – You’ll need to be comfortable coming up with your own data-driven story ideas and get comfortable in many different domains – everything from venture capital to internet companies to electric vehicles.
  • Moving Quickly – We are not looking for someone to write research papers. We want someone who can quickly analyze data and develop pithy and powerful data-driven briefs on a wide variety of topics.
Other things that will likely make you a shoe-in for this role:
  • Experience with data collection & extraction – While we have most of the data you’ll need for your analysis, if you have experience with data collection and extraction, that’ll be useful.
  • Model & Algorithm Development – Prior experience with the development & creation of models and algorithms.
  • Previous data analysis/storytelling experience – Either in a prior role or on your own (personal blog for example).
  • Startup/Emerging Technology Enthusiast – We track high growth private companies (tech to biotech to clean tech) and their investors and acquirers. Prior experience and interest in these areas will be a big plus.
  • MySQL querying capabilities – If the words LEFT OUTER JOIN mean anything to you, then you might be in the right place.
Please e-mail us at career@cbinsights.com if you’re interested in joining our team.

FAIR PRICING FOR DIGITAL CONTENT
Message from Rebekah Brooks

Those of you that subscribe to The Times and The Sunday Times or have registered on Times Online will receive a communication starting from this week inviting you to register for an exclusive preview of the new digital proposition. This shows that we are getting closer to the launch of the titles’ new digital sites.

I have made no secret of our intention to start charging for quality journalism online. As you may have seen speculation in the media about our plans, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know why we believe this is such an important development.

We are committed to producing quality journalism that is written by professionals with a profound understanding of their subject and a commitment to provide well-informed coverage of the issues. Each of our titles, in its own way, has pioneered quality, professional journalism and we are unashamed to say we believe it has value.

In contrast, the industry is making the mistake of chasing millions of unique users by giving the audience more and more content for free. An obsession with traffic just doesn’t pay.
Great journalism needs investment and we are committed to supporting the fantastic work that you are all producing and delivering to our audiences. It is the quality of the journalism that you create, and the ways in which we produce and distribute it, that will continue to set our titles apart from the competition.

And to be clear, when we talk about charging for our content online, we are talking about charging a fair price. Price alone will not be a barrier to take up. Of course, we expect to see the numbers of unique users of our sites come down dramatically. But the people who register to our new digital products will be customers who have made a positive decision to pay a fair price for journalism that they value, and they will be those who are more committed to and engaged with our titles.

This is an exciting development for our company especially as we will be among the first in the world to take this step. There are many who declare we have set ourselves an impossible task. But our company loves nothing more than challenging the status quo.

Shortly I will update you on our plans in more detail. But, in the meantime, I believe that with the combined force of your talent, commitment and hard work, we will, in the months and years to come, define a new future in the way we create, deliver and profit from our journalism.

Πόσο έχουν δύο κιλά άγρια ραδίκια;

Εχουν τιμή τα αγριοράδικα;

Τι τιμή έχουν και ποιος την ορίζει;
At no cost!
Τότε;
Το κουτσομπολιό έχει τιμή;
Δηλαδή η γιαγιά μας η Φωτούλα πλήρωνε τη γειτόνισσα την Κατίνα όταν εκείνη ερχόταν και της έλεγε οτι ο Ανέστης κεράτωσε τη γυναίκα του με την ξαδέλφη του Παναγή;
Κι ακόμη παραπέρα: Τι τιμή έχει ένα τροχαίο ατύχημα; Δηλαδή πόσο πρέπει να πληρώσω για να μάθω οτι πριν δύο ώρες στην Κηφισίας τράκαραν τρία ΙΧ και οτι υπάρχουν δύο σοβαρά τραυματίες;
Κι ακόμη πιο εκεί: Τι τιμή έχουν οι δηλώσεις του Πρωθυπουργού έξω από τον Λευκό Οίκο την περασμένη εβδομάδα; Πόσο κάνει να μάθω τι ακριβώς είπε;
Τότε;
Ισως θα έπρεπε, από την άλλη, να πει σε εμάς τους δημοσιογράφους οτι έχουμε πάψει πλέον να καθαρίζουμε, να επιλέγουμε, να «μαγειρεύουμε» σωστά τις ειδήσεις έτσι ώστε να γίνονται εύγευστη και θρεπτική τροφή;
Τι από τα τρία συμβαίνει;
Μήπως και τα τρία;

Πάμε Ισλανδία;

ΤΙ λες τώρα;;;

REYKJAVIK, Iceland — Hoping to make Iceland a global home for freedom of speech, lawmakers were asking the government Tuesday to implement a journalist’s dream package of legislation – promising a safe haven for reporters who want to dig deep, hit hard, and avoid being sued.

The idea has found traction with Icelanders after last year’s devastating economic collapse, during which the public saw firsthand the drawbacks of a too-cosy relationship between government and media. The economic crisis itself was partly traced to corruption unearthed by reporters abroad, prompting calls for improving information access and protecting whistle-blowers.

«Being a really small country, especially after the financial crisis, we saw the world is connected – all intertwined,» said Birgitta Jonsdottir, one of the lawmakers behind the measures. «Our problems do not just affect us locally, they affect us globally.»

Iceland’s parliament will on Tuesday begin considering the measures, aimed at improving the Nordic nation’s own transparency while also luring Internet-based media and data centres to use it as a base for investigative journalism.

Becoming a global home for freedom of speech would be a new role for Iceland, which in its 1,000 years of human settlement has been known as a hardy North Atlantic fishing outpost, an unlikely capitalist crusader – fueled by Viking confidence and easy credit – and most recently, an economic basket-case.
