1. Μην τους κρύψετε την αλήθεια. Τα παιδιά είναι διορατικά και να ξέρετε ότι αν προσπαθήσετε να καλύψετε μια σκληρή πραγματικότητα με σκοπό την προστασία τους, το μόνο που καταφέρνετε είναι να αυξάνεται τις ανησυχίες τους. Ενώ εσείς δεν χρειάζεται να πείτε στα παιδιά όλα τα γεγονότα, οφείλετε να τους τα εξηγήσετε προσαρμοσμένα στο επίπεδο που τα κατανοούν.
Έτσι, για ένα μικρό παιδί θα πείτε: «Ο μπαμπάς και η μαμά είναι λίγο ανήσυχοι τώρα για τη δουλειά τους, αλλά κάνουμε ό,τι μπορούμε, ώστε όλοι μας να είναι εντάξει.» Για ένα μεγαλύτερο παιδί: «Ξέρω ότι έχεις ακούσει για το πόσο κακή είναι η οικονομία τώρα. Τα πράγματα θα είναι σφιχτά στο σπίτι μας για λίγο διάστημα, αλλά δουλεύουμε σκληρά για να να μην είναι και τόσο.» Εάν πρόκειται να χάσετε το σπίτι σας, ή τη δουλειά σας, κλπ. βεβαιωθείτε ότι εσείς θα το πείτε στο παιδί…
